2 Corinthians 1:11
...as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.
On one of my mission trips to Nepal, I really began to struggle emotionally. I missed my family, the rigors of the hiking and elevation changes were taking their toll on my energy levels, I was having trouble sleeping, and the diet was less than ideal. Yet, all of that would have been fine if the harvest was great. But it wasn't. We had few professions of faith regardless of how hard we worked. We were all frustrated. One night, during my private prayer time, I shared these feelings once again with the Lord. Suddenly I felt this infusion of peace, life and joy. I just knew someone had been praying for me. From that point forward the whole trip changed dramatically for the better. It became one of our most fruitful missions ever.
The day following my encounter with the Lord in Nepal, we finally arrived in an area with cell phone service. When I spoke with my wife, the first thing she asked was, "Did you feel us praying for you yesterday? The forty women in our women's group were all praying for your team. I really felt you needed our prayers. Did you?" I said, "You have no idea."
My experience is an illustration of the point Paul makes in our passage today: The prayers of the Corinthian Church were a part of the process God used to deliver Paul and his team. Paul says, "When we were despairing of life itself, you helped us by praying for us!" I can really relate. Although I might not have feared for my life, I did feel the weight of frustration and despair. But, it all was lifted with the help of the prayers from home and our entire team was re-energized!
Don't forget to pray for others. My experience has super-charged my personal commitment to pray for others. I know the Lord hears our prayers and makes intercession. Who needs your prayers? Will you commit to lifting them up right now?
